Along with providing daily press releases, the press officers for the Spanish oil giant also found time to interview Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner, and issue the interviews in the form of press releases. In the first of the two interviews, Dani Pedrosa talks about his experience at the tests, the physical demands of riding a bigger and much heavier 1000cc bike, the differences between the 1000cc MotoGP machines of 2012 and the 990cc machines of 2006, and his view of up-and-coming Spanish riders like Marc Marquez and Alex Rins.

With the introduction of 1000cc bikes to the MotoGP World Championship this season, the Repsol rider was carrying out an extensive program in order to develop his Repsol Honda RC213V - the succesor to the 2011 title winning machine.

Former world champion Jorge Lorenzo has urged MotoGP organisers to cut the top speed of the sport's new 1,000cc bikes to improve safety, just months after the tragic death of a young rider.

Lorenzo was speaking after three days of testing brought a generally warm reception for the bigger, faster new machines at Malaysia's Sepang circuit, where Italy's Marco Simoncelli died in October.

World champion Casey Stoner demolished Valentino Rossi's 2009 track record, set on an 800cc bike, by nearly a second Thursday, although his time of 1min 59.607sec will not stand as a new mark because it was set out of competition.

"We are at the dawn of the 1,000cc (era)," Mike Webb, race director with motorcycle racing's governing body FIM, told AFP.

"The riders enjoy the bike. The spectators will surely enjoy the race a lot more and they will be safer and easier to ride."

But Spain's Lorenzo, the 2010 world champion with Yamaha, admitted he was uncomfortable riding the bikes at top speed, which can hit 320 kilometres per hour (198 miles per hour) along straights.

"I am not happy on the top speed. We need to reduce the top speed if we want to make it a safe category," Lorenzo said.

Meanwhile his fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, who races for Honda, complained about some issues with chatter -- vibrations caused by hard braking.

"You go into the corner and the bike is chattering. Chatter is something very difficult to fix. Surely they (Honda) are on it," Pedrosa told reporters.

But they and other riders were confident teams would master the machines in time for the season's April start in Qatar, and admitted some excitement about the new era.

"We want to recapture the very good racing we had during the 990cc era. It will reignite MotoGP popularity," Webb said, adding that the heavier bikes will allow riders to "slide" -- tilt around turns -- with more power.

"This is also good to watch," he said.

Seven-time world champion Rossi also played down any safety concerns.

"We can slide and the bike becomes more fun," he said.

"I like the 1,000cc. This type of engine has better torque and better driveability. For me... the speed will be impressive and I don't think it will be more dangerous."

Webb added that the faster bikes will make races "much more entertaining" and attract more fans.

"The bikes will have enough speed to accelerate out of turns. So there should be more chances for overtaking," he said.

He said the shift has boosted participation in the sport to a four-year high in 2012 of 22 riders because it is cheaper for private teams to source 1,000cc engines in the market and build their own chassis.

Last year, 17 riders vied for the MotoGP title. Manufacturers do not produce 800cc engines, meaning teams had to build their own bikes from scratch.

Webb said transmissions were also smoother on the larger engines, making it easier shift up or down and thus leading to "less accidents".

He warned: "There is no such thing as 100 percent safety.

"But we are very happy with the level of safety and the chances of something going wrong is very, very low now."

Beginning in 2002, racing was done on 990cc engines, until the 800cc bikes were introduced for the 2007 season.

In October, 24-year-old Simoncelli died after coming off his Honda in a crash involving Colin Edwards and Rossi just minutes after the start of the Sepang race.

In summer 2011 had the trip of the lifetime! Two months in Europe with my girlfriend who was awesome enough to come with me to the Mugello Moto GP. (She told me to say this. In reality, she only came because I took her to Lake Como…)

I also took my trusty GSXR 1000, bought brand new in 2005. I'd since put over 65,000 kms on the clock, including an insane amount of track days, and I was slightly worried she wouldn't survive Europe. To make sure, I had her leak down tested (she was toight!), new tires, clutch cable, fresh oil and filters. With the motor and still pumping 158hp on the dyno, she was good to go!

In those two months, I covered another 14,000kms through the South of France, Switzerland, The Italian Dolomites, Tuscany and my birthplace Transylvania. Though I call Australia home, riding through the hills where I grew up was fulfilling a childhood fantasy.

Go to Wikipedia today (Wednesday, January 18th) to search for information, and you will be met with a dark page bearing a stark warning: "Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge". The reason for Wikipedia's blackout is simple: they, along with other major internet companies such as Google, WordPress, Reddit, Tucows, Boing Boing and sites such Twitpic all oppose the legislation currently going through the US Congress to prevent so-called content piracy. Two bills are currently under consideration, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA), both of which are aimed at preventing the illegal theft of content owned by the US film, music and software industry.

That is a noble aim: the people who work hard to create the movies, TV series, music and computer games that we all love deserve to be paid for their work. They invest large amounts of money to produce content, and they do not deserve to have their product stolen and redistributed by gangs of organized criminals who make money off of the games, movies and music made by the content owners, without contributing anything to those content owners.

The major leap forward which Honda's MotoGP bike has taken in the past two seasons has come in two distinct areas, the chassis and the electronics. Much of the work of sorting out the RC212V's chassis was done during the 2010 season, when the factory tried out five different chassis variations and several different swingarms, before getting the bike right early in the 2011 season. Parallel to the chassis, Honda spent two years improving their MotoGP bike's electronics, after poaching two of Yamaha's key staff to work on HRC's electronics package. The resulting machine, in the hands of Casey Stoner, proved unbeatable throughout the 2011 season.

While Filippo Preziosi played his cards tantalizingly close to his chest at the Wrooom event, where Ducati launched their 2012 MotoGP challenger for the Marlboro Ducati factory team, satellite squad Cardion AB is being a lot more loose-lipped. Today, the team, which will be running Karel Abraham again in the MotoGP class, issued a press release full of some fascinating details about the satellite Ducati GP12 which Abraham will be racing this season.

According to the press release, the bike produces 250 horsepower, 15 hp up from the 800cc GP11 Abraham raced in 2011. Top speed is up also, from 340 km/h for the 800cc GP11 to 360 km/h (or nearly 235 mph) for the GP12. Both numbers are in the region expected, though numbers released through the factories tend to be intentionally inaccurate. Whether factory numbers are optimistic or pessimistic - and by how much - is left very much to the imagination of the reader.

The 36th edition of the Bologna Motor Show concluded on Sunday after two weeks of activities related to the four wheeled world. Apart from manufacturer?s new editions on display, the show hosts various competitions and exhibitions every year that are pure adrenaline on the Mobil 1 Arena circuit. Yesterday the Memorial Bettega rally took place, a rally wherein professional Rally car face off with guests from other racing disciplines.

The winner of this edition was Norwegian WRC driver Petter Solberg, with MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso claiming second in the final.

The Italian was the main protagonist at the 27th edition of the Memorial Bettega, the highlight of the second week of the Bologna Motor Show. With impeccable driving at the wheel of his Ford Fiesta RS, Dovizioso won the semifinal against Jari-Matti Latvala before the thrilling final against Solberg.

?Today went well and I beat all of the challengers, including the best, and only the final didn?t go perfectly and I made a few mistakes. I didn?t win, but in front of people like Petter,? added Dovizioso, who remains open to future forays competing on four wheels. ?I could participate every day in races like this, though I don?t know if I could be as competitive in a ?real? rally.?

The 2011 edition of the Motor Show featured various tributes to Marco Simoncelli. One of the first events of the Bologna Motor Show featured a tribute video to the late Italian star, with an additional homage video played this past Saturday at the Bettega Memorial Rally - a competition that ?Super Sic? would not have missed.

Bad news came from the Yamaha factory team to the 2012 MotoGP season. Yamaha Factory Racing return loss their sponsors. After last year no longer supported FIAT, starting next season Yamaha no longer feel support of Petronas, which has supported them over the last 3 years.

Oil and gas company owned by Malaysian government has joined forces with Yamaha since 2009. In the duration of the contract, they undergo three racing season is fantastic. Both managed to win the world title in 2009 by Valentino Rossi and 2010 through Jorge Lorenzo.

Last year a slump season for Yamaha. After Rossi to Ducati, Yamaha also lost a major sponsor, FIAT. So, no-frills product name in the Yamaha factory team.

After not supported FIAT, Petronas had been the largest financial supporter for the Yamaha factory team. However, in a contract clause that says there's no point Petronas entitled to replace the name FIAT Yamaha factory team.

Without a major sponsor outside manufacturer, Yamaha will have financial difficulties in wading competition next season. In the midst of financial crisis that has not been recovered in Japan and crises that are befalling Europe, the development of motor for one year will be borne by Yamaha.

The greater the difficulty will probably haunt at the end of the competition. Lorenzo and Ben Spies are now strengthening factory team will end contract at the end of season. Yamaha will be difficult to give an offer to bind the riders in the next season.

Wrooom 2012 Kicks Off, But GP12 Will Not Be Present At Ducati Launch

The annual launch of Ducati and Ferrari's season got underway today at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio. The Wrooom event was opened with the official presentation of Ducati MotoGP riders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, alongside Ferrari's Formula 1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, followed by an official dinner.

Though Rossi and Hayden are present, the expected star of the show will be absent: Ducati will not be presenting the 2012 Desmosedici GP12 at Wrooom, and the bike will make its first public appearance at the Sepang test on January 31st. Ducati Corse project leader Filippo Preziosi told French journalist Michel Turco of Moto Revue that Ducati had planned to do this since November. The bike will be taken to Jerez for a shakedown test; however, it is as yet unclear whether the bike will be tested by Carlos Checa in Spain, or if only test rider Franco Battaini will take the new bike out on the track.

Much will be cleared up about the new bike on Wednesday, when Preziosi will face an extended grilling by the assembled motorcycle media. On Tuesday, it is the turn of Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden to face the press.

Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli has been tragically killed in a crash during today's Malaysian Moto GP, race organisers have confirmed.

The Gresini Honda rider lost control of his bike on the second lap of the circuit in Sepang and appeared to be hit by Colin Edwards and then Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track.

The fatal incident comes just a week after British IndyCar racing driver Dan Wheldon died after crashing in Las Vegas

The 24-year-old's helmet came off in the collision and he was taken to the medical centre for treatment, but his injuries were too serious.

A message on the MotoGP website read: 'Marco Simoncelli succumbed to injuries sustained in Malaysia.'

Newly-crowned champion Casey Stoner admitted watching the accident made him worried for Simoncelli, who was later pronounced dead.

'As soon as I saw the footage it just makes you sick inside,' the Australian told BBC2.
'Whenever the helmet comes off that's not a good sign.'

Tony Elias, Moto2 world champion, said he was praying the injuries to Simoncelli were not serious before learning the devastating news.

'We just hope Marco is OK - that's my wish,' he said.

The organisers confirmed the race was cancelled, having halted it immediately after the fatal incident.

A bulletin from the organisers, reported on website Autosport, said: 'Race cancelled as the medical centre staff is focusing on treating Marco Simoncelli and track action cannot be resumed in the current circumstances.'

It was confirmed on MotoGP's official website that he died at 4.56pm local time.

Tributes came in pouring in from his fellow riders soon after the incident.

British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow wrote on Twitter: 'RIP Marco Simoncelli ! A great rider and all round nice guy. My thoughts are with all his family & friends. I will never forget today.'

From Monday, a select group of the world's print and TV media will assemble at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio to attend Wrooom 2012, the annual press launch of Ducati's MotoGP project and Ferrari's Formula One assault. The junket, funded by the Italian arm of tobacco giant Phillip Morris, starts on Monday and culminates on Friday in an exhibition race where Ferrari's F1 drivers take on Ducati's MotoGP riders (minus the injured Nicky Hayden, in all probability) in a kart race held on an ice rink in the heart of the Italian ski resort.
